Sam Bird was born on 9th January 1987 in Roehampton, near London. He competed in National and International karting events until the age of 15, achieving numerous wins and podiums, but never completing an entire championship due to school commitments. He subsequently won a scholarship to race in the inaugural season of Formula BMW, ending the year with three wins and finishing runner-up in the rookie standings.Bird remained in Formula BMW for a second season and finished as championship runner-up. He was also shortlisted for the Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award, the first of two nominations in consecutive years. After a number of seasons progressing through Formula Renault and Formula 3 with multiple race victories, Bird held testing duties for Williams focussing on straight-line aero development.He eventually joined forces with Mercedes F1 for the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi and was subsequently named as their Test and Reserve Driver. Bird has competed in World Series by Renault where he finished third, and GP2 where he secured the teams’ title for new team Russian Time, and narrowly missed out on the drivers’ championship, claiming five wins en route to second in the standings. He made his WEC debut in 2014, racing the Ferrari 458 for AF Corse at Silverstone, where he finished on the podium, and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he secured GTE-Am pole position.In 2015, Bird became WEC LMP2 Champion, with 4 wins, 3 further podiums and 4 pole positions on his way to the title. He also races in the FIA Formula E Championship, where he is a three time race winner. In 2016 he will be competing in the WEC championship at the wheel of the 488 GTE no. 71. Davide Regon will be his teammate.
