August 6, 2017 (Plymouth, Wis.) – By finishing in fifth position in Saturday’s IMSA Road Race Showcase at Road America, drivers Alessandro Balzan and Christina Nielsen took another step towards the GT-Daytona championship.
Starting from sixth position in the no. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 GT3, Nielsen took one position immediately at the start of the two hour and forty-minute race. Nielsen had moved the Ferrari up to fourth position in class before getting out of the car during its first pit stop. Balzan returned to the race in seventh position and battled his way forward before a late race caution jumbled the running order and set up a short run to the finish. He would take the checkered flag in fifth position, following Jeroen Bleekemolen in the no. 33 Mercedes-AMG GT3. Jens Klingmann took the win in the no. 96 BMW M6 GT3.
That result means Balzan and Nielsen have recorded their seventh top-five finish of the season, which includes six podium finishes and best finishes of second at Sebring, Circuit of The Americas, Belle Isle and the Six Hours of the Glen.
Balzan and Nielsen leave Road America with a 15-point lead in the GT-Daytona driver championship, with three races remaining in the season championship. Ferrari also mantains its lead in the GT-Daytona manufacturer championship.
The next round of the IMSA Sportscar Championship will be the IMSA GT-Challenge at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia. Featuring the GT-LeMans and GT-Daytona classes, the race will be held on August 25-27.
